Enjoying the Venture-backed Ride
We are told to enjoy the journey.
This is another one of those many things we are told to do, but very seldom taught how.
Most of us are such doers and forward thinking (which got us here in the first place) that we spend little time on the past or present.
Our startup journey is commonly a long and challenging process, it’s important for teams to discover ways to enjoy the journey because not only is it a better experience but they often have more success.
Five ways to enjoy the journey and make it a habit:
1. Celebrate Small Wins: Celebrating small wins can help keep you motivated throughout the journey. These wins could be anything from reaching a milestone or gaining a new customer. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, celebrated the platform's first million users by ordering a cake and writing a blog post to thank its users. 🚀⛰️Celebrate wins in your Weekly Camp Meetings and Quarterly All-hands Meetings.
2. Focus on Learning: Building a startup provides an excellent opportunity for continuous learning. As you navigate through the process of building your business, focus on learning new skills, and gaining knowledge. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, is known for his passion for learning and continuous improvement, which has contributed to his success. 🚀⛰️Establish a book club that meets every quarter, or allocate quarterly funds for team members to pursue activities that foster personal growth and learning.
4. Build a Support Network: Building a startup can be a lonely journey, but having a support network can make it more enjoyable. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your vision. Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal, started her business in a community of like-minded individuals who provided support and encouragement. 🚀⛰️Set up calendar reminders to stay in touch with your peers or become a part of peer groups that have regular meetings.
5. Embrace Failure: Failure is inevitable when building a startup, but it's essential to learn from those failures and use them as an opportunity for growth. Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, faced many failures before building a successful e-commerce empire. 🚀⛰️ Document your failures on a board or in a journal, and write down three key lessons learned each time you identify one.
7. Practice Gratitude: Building a startup requires hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Take a moment to appreciate the progress you have made, the people who have supported you, and the opportunities that have come your way. Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, writes down something she's grateful for every day to stay focused on the positive aspects of her journey. 🚀⛰️Set up calendar reminders to encourage daily gratitude journaling or gratitude walks.
